In Times of Need

I came across a touching story, in which a young army Major is mistakenly led by a nurse to the bedside of an elderly man who is dying. Despite realising the misunderstanding, the Major chooses to stay and comfort the old man, as if he were his son. Throughout the night, he sits by the man’s side, offering love and support until the man passes away at dawn.

Thereafter, he went to nurse and asked who he was. Taken aback, she said, “He was your father.” Then the young man reveals that he has come to meet and console Mr Shailesh Khera, whose son was killed in Jammu and Kashmir last night. The nurse replied, “But the man whose hand you held all night, he was Mr. Shailesh Khera.”

The Major’s compassionate gesture exemplifies the power of presence and companionship in times of need. It underscores the significance of supporting others, especially when it’s least expected. Inspired by this touching tale, I’ve penned the following poem:

In Times of Need

In times of need, when shadows fall,

And troubles loom, casting their pall…

A beacon shines, steadfast and true,

Is the support we tender, me and you…

.

With resolute hearts, we stand near,

To chase away every trace of fear…

Comforting words, like gentle streams,

Flowing through their restless dreams…

.

Genuine enthusiasm, a beacon bright,

Guiding through the blackest of night…

Assurance constant, a soothing balm,

In the turmoil’s grip, a peaceful calm…

.

Not alone, we proclaim with pride,

In this journey, we’ll be side by side…

Together healing wounds and scars

Uplifting spirits, no matter how far…

.

So let’s take pledge, in unified decree,

To be the remedy they yearn to see…

With presence and support, evermore,

We’ll be their strength, their open door…

.

Your words are profoundly true; in times of need, we find a sympathetic ear vital, especially when it comes with friendly words and a hug.

  2. Dear KK. So many of your posts remind me of events in my life; this is no exception. However, I am loathe to make these comments appear to be all about me so one day soon I will write my own post about the memory your story sparked in me. Thank you, my friend, for these reminders. अनमोल यादें

  3. I like this very much! The element of randomness in the comfort given (story portion) reminds that if we’re open to being led, it’s not in our hands, only.

And truly, one doesn’t always know, so sprinkle that kindness everywhere. It’s an easy win for all, no?
