Difference

KK

Sitting on the balcony
he stares at the house
abandoned by its inmates
and taken over by trees
unwanted creepers
and black bindweeds…

People stop for a while
give a quick glance
over its dilapidation
curse its owners
and move away…

He is ninety now alone
he looks at himself
and then at the relics
of that deserted house
and tries to find out
how different he is
from that house…

  3. Thank you, Kaushal, for the poignant reflections on human life. The picture of the house you have chosen, begs the question; who would abandon a beautiful house like this? I would have it anytime!
    As to the old man abandoned, I do sympathise with his situation, but not with him smoking.
    Luckily, in India, not many old people are left abandoned.

    1. Thank you, Joanna for your analytical comment, as always. India has undergone a sea change during the last 75 years. Most of new generation youth are fond of western culture and thoughts, looking out for green visa. Even my cousins are not willing to come to India from US for disposing of their ancestral property.

      1. Shame really, as I would love this house! Old houses hold the memory of the generations who lived there before, so why not keep them as a place for family meetings?

      2. I agree, Joanna, but there should be a family for family meetings. I can see here old lonely people sitting on the balcony looking outside meaninglessly. I had never seen large housing complexes coming in all areas for senior citizens. Things are changing fast.
