On December 24, 1999, Rachna Katyal and her husband, Rupin Katyal, were returning to Delhi from their honeymoon in Kathmandu, Nepal, when their flight, IC814 (Indian Airlines), was hijacked by five militants linked to the terrorist group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.
The plane, carrying 180 passengers and crew, was forced to divert to Lahore, where it refueled before continuing to Dubai and eventually landing in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Following intense drama and multiple rounds of negotiations, three militants were released in exchange for the passengers and crew.
This hijacking stands as a grim chapter in India’s history, marred by the tragic killing of 25-year-old businessman Rupin Katyal, who was brutally murdered by the terrorists. His wife, Rachna, was left widowed just 21 days into their marriage—a honeymoon that had turned into a horrific nightmare.
On the very first night of the hijack, the terrorists had singled out Rupin, separating him from Rachna and brutally murdering him to demonstrate their resolve. His lifeless body was deplaned in Dubai.
Rachna, unaware of Rupin’s fate, endured days of terror, believing that Rupin was still alive and in hospital. Her world shattered when she learned the truth.
After Rupin’s death, his father, Chander Mohan Katyal, became a pillar of strength for Rachna, encouraging her to rebuild her life and seek employment, helping her manage the immense grief and loss.
Rupin’s father and his wife were resolute in ensuring that the tragedy would not define Rachna’s future. To them, she was like a daughter who needed care and support, especially after enduring such a devastating event.
In a moment of heartfelt reflection, Rachna once expressed her gratitude, recalling how the Katyal family had guided her through the darkest period of her life. “My in-laws have come to terms with the loss of their son, and now they have dedicated themselves to my well-being, helping me rebuild my life.”
Understanding that Rachna was still young, just 21 years old, Chander Mohan Katyal made the important decision to assist her in starting anew. His unwavering support, combined with Rachna’s determination to move forward, led to her securing a position with Indian Airlines.
With the unwavering support of her in-laws and her own inner strength, Rachna began to rebuild her life. She embraced her new role with the airlines, discovering a renewed sense of purpose and belonging.
In 2001, just two years after the hijacking incident, Rachna took another courageous step forward, once again with the full backing of her in-laws. She remarried a manager from an MNC, finding love and companionship anew. In a heartwarming gesture, her father-in-law performed the Kanyadaan, a sacred Hindu ritual traditionally carried out by the bride’s own father, symbolising the giving away of the bride.
This second marriage marked the dawn of a new chapter in Rachna’s life. She welcomed her first child in 2002. With the steadfast support of the Katyal family and her own resilience, Rachna transformed her life from one overshadowed by tragedy to one filled with hope and new beginnings.
P.S.
I recently watched the web series “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack” on Netflix, which recounts the longest hijacking in Indian aviation history. However, my thoughts kept returning to Rachna’s ordeal, which is why I’m sharing this post today.

Thank you for sharing this. I clearly remember this tense and tragic hijack incident. So many lives were at stake. We prayed for each one of them.
I haven’t seen the Netflix series related to IC 814, but have heard that the makers have distorted the reality, using their ‘creative freedom.’
I believe, such movies should be made with responsibility depicting the real facts.
Well narrated.
Thanks for sharing this.

You’re right, the whole country was in prayer then.
Some sort of distortion is always there when a movie or serial is made, though there was a disclaimer in the beginning of this series. I have not talked about the series, but it did remind me of Rachna’s predicament. Thank you for appreciating and sharing your beautiful reflections!

You’re right, Joanna, apart from in-laws’ support, it was Rachna’s conviction that she came out of the ordeal.! Glad you liked the story and image! Your appreciation means a lot. Thank you!

We had a parish priest who had been on a TWA hijacked plane. When he came home, he had a nervous breakdown.

You have rightly raised the issue of nervous breakdown. In such cases, hostages start losing mental balance under fear and terror. Thank you, Mary!
