Transition

Heavy eyes full of sleep
willing to sleep a little longer,
but responsibility beckons her…

She was once a child,
free from all worries,
then she became
a daughter, a bride,
a daughter-in-law and a wife,
taking duties and responsibilities
one by one…

And now she is a mother,
she gets up at four in the morning
to set everything right
for every family member,
rejoicing to fulfil their needs
with whatever she has…

She has learnt it all from her mother
and the faith imposed
and responsibilities delegated
by her mother in-law,
she has done her own value addition
and quality improvement
to make the transition complete…

She has now consolidated
what she has achieved,
the bundles of hopes
and responsibilities,
it’s now time to delegate them
one by one…

She marries her son off
and hands over her mantle
to her daughter-in-law,
thus laying the bricks
of another transition
one by one
to facilitate creation
of a new chapter of history,
before becoming herself
a part of history…

  1. Your posts always move me in some way, KK, but this one has found a special place in my heart for I can truly relate to the roles of daughter, sister, wife, daughter-in-law, mother, mother-in-law and now grandmother. No one really knows or appreciates the loving sacrifices women make except women themselves but you were able to put yourself in their shoes and see through their eyes for this exceptional poem. Thank you, my dear friend, for this marvelous tribute.

    1. Thank you, Nancy, for your appreciation that certainly means the world to me. This poem has been inspired by my mother, who left for heavenly abode two and half years ago. From the very infancy, I have seen her managing difficult situations as a homemaker. That’s why I often write about her or about other mothers like her, as I believe all mothers are more or less like her. Thanks once again for your kind words 🙏💐

  3. Lovely as always Sir. Among all the odds n molds in each of her role, she’s more beautiful powerful with motherhood n the ornament of the child’s Smile. She can walk millions of miles thru it to get the success.🥰

  4. Lovely optimistic view of role shifting by a woman who appears happy and willing to assume each of these roles in turn. Many are not so happy or so willing–some run away and others do it begrudgingly. Despite my grumpy remarks, it is a touching poem.

  5. Aww the destiny of a woman, a mother and so beautifully told, until she takes her part in the larger family history. I love that you chose this subject, that every mother no matter in what culture will understand it. Beautifully thought and written out Kaushal…You captured the beautiful continuity.🌹
