The Power of One

Who does not aspire to be number one (1)? Number 1 in school, profession, trade, health, wealth, life, and what not! After all, who wants to play second fiddle to others.

Number 1 is like this only. This is considered the most powerful number, a sign of authority and an expression of uniqueness. You have to be number one to be unique.

It’s a sign of a new beginning, because it’s the initial number. The number one symbolises unity and beginning of any thing.

It gives identity too. Multiply any number with it, result will be that number. Exponent rule also says that any number raised to the power of one equals the number itself.

It’s the only natural number that divides all other natural numbers. A probability of 1 amounts to virtual certainty in statistics.

Numerology says so many things including forecasts about person and life path associated with birth under number one. Angel numbers with repeating 1 are also there, e.g. 11, 111, 1111 etc and beliefs about divine message from the Almighty.

But what I’m going to tell about 1 here is how we play with this powerful number, as we are the most powerful creature on this earth. Just see.

If 1 is added to 1, it becomes 2, that’s the simple arithmetic, nothing extraordinary. But in an organisation, it becomes 11, the first two-digit  numeric palindrome.

Love has some other magic. It makes 1  out of 1 plus 1. But the magic doesn’t end with love. In spirituality, addition of 1 and 1 results into zero (0).

Sometimes, 1 is not allowed to meet another 1, it’s called strategy, and the worst is politics, where one is set against the other 1.

But jokes apart, numbers bring order, ease and certainty in life. Everything in this world has some value and value is assigned and compared by numbers only.

Finally, we know that in English grammar, the first-person singular number is I. So in a way, it asks you to take care of yourself first, before hopping into a relationship or anything. True love flies to you once you start loving yourself. Always be number 1 to yourself.

  1. Thank you, Kaushal, for the erudite musing about self-love. There are two things that I would like to say;
Firstly, you cannot be number one to yourself if you have children as you were number one to your beloved mother.
Secondly, you know the apt quote I bring when you write about numbers:
“You have to be odd to be number one.”

PS. I am full of admiration for your logical thoughts and knowledge, Kaushal.

    1. Thank you so much, Joanna, for your thoughtful comment. You have raised a good point, but frankly speaking, I was not only number 1 of my mom, as she used to treat all siblings as number 1. My assertion to be number 1 was in the context of previous sentences related to self-love, as today we observe increasing number of cases of depression and suicide, because of self hate.
Thank you, Joanna for sharing quote of Dr Seuss. I have rephrased it in my second paragraph as – you have to be number one to be unique.

      1. I am so happy with your reply; your mum was a gem of a mother, I wish she could be cloned!
I noticed your version of the quote, as always, Kaushal, you are one step ahead!
