स्व-प्रेम: हिंदी दिवस

हिंदी में एक प्रसिद्ध कविता है,
“वह हृदय नहीं पत्थर है,
जिसमें स्वदेश का प्यार नहीं”

आत्म-स्वीकृति स्व-प्रेम की शुरुआत है। लेकिन आत्म-प्रेम स्वार्थी नहीं होता है। आप तब तक दूसरों से सच्चा प्यार नहीं कर सकते, जब तक आप खुद से प्यार करना नहीं जान जाते। आप दूसरों की माताओं का अपमान करके अपनी माँ का महिमा मंडन नहीं कर सकते। किसी ने ठीक ही कहा था कि खुद से प्यार करना दंभ नहीं है, यह समझदारी है।

भाषाओं के मामले में भी यही मानदंड लागू होता है।
याद रखें, प्रत्येक भाषा किसी न किसी की मातृभाषा होती है अर्थात *मां की भाषा।* यह वह भाषा है, जिसमें व्यक्ति तुतलाते हुए बोलना सीखता है, जिससे लगाव होना स्वाभाविक है। यही कारण है कि मौलिक विचार हमें अपनी मातृभाषा में ही आते हैं।

हर भाषा अपने आप में सुंदर होती हैं। अतः किसी भी भाषा का अपमान एक मां का अपमान है। हमें अपनी सभी मांओं को साथ लेकर चलना होगा, तभी सर्वांगीण समावेशी विकास सम्भव है।

आज हिंदी दिवस है, जो प्रति वर्ष 14 सितंबर को राजभाषा के रूप में हिंदी को अंगीकृत करने के उपलक्ष में मनाया जाता है।

लेकिन केवल राजनीतिक संरक्षण से कुछ प्राप्त नहीं होगा, इसके लिए लोगों के सच्चे प्यार और सम्मान की जरूरत है, जो दुर्भाग्य से अंग्रेजी को सामाजिक और पदानुक्रमित उदगम के निशान के रूप में देखते हैं। अंग्रेजी माध्यम के कॉन्वेंट स्कूल प्रतिष्ठित माने जाते हैं। कुत्ते के मालिक हमेशा अपने पालतू जानवरों से अंग्रेजी में बात करते हैं। क्यों?

मुझे यकीन है कि हम में से अधिकांश ने “गीतांजलि श्री” द्वारा लिखित “रेत समाधि” नहीं पढ़ी होगी। लेकिन जब अमेरिकी अनुवादक, डेज़ी रॉकवेल ने मूल रूप से 2018 में हिंदी में लिखी गई इस पुस्तक का अनुवाद “टॉम्ब ऑफ सैंड” शीर्षक से किया और इस वर्ष इसने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय बुकर पुरस्कार जीता, तो हमें पता चला कि ऐसा रत्न तो हमारे बीच है।

हममें से कितने लोगों ने प्रेमचंद की अमर कृतियों जैसे गबन, गोदान, निर्मला, सेवासदन, कर्मभूमि आदि को पढ़ा है? हममें से कितने लोगों ने रामधारी सिंह दिनकर, मैथिली शरण गुप्त, जयशंकर प्रसाद, महादेवी वर्मा, सूर्यकांत त्रिपाठी ‘निराला’, अयोध्या सिंह उपाध्याय ‘हरिऔध’ द्वारा लिखित भावपूर्ण कविताओं की सराहना की है?

ब्रिटिश शासन से पहले, रहीम, रसखान, जायसी और अमीर खुसरो जैसे मुस्लिम विद्वानों के लेखन में भी हिंदी की काफी उपस्थिति थी। लेकिन जब कोई देश उपनिवेश बनता है, तो सबसे पहले राष्ट्रीय गौरव और भाषा की भावना आहत होती है। ब्रितानियों के आगमन के साथ, न केवल हिंदी, बल्कि अन्य प्राचीन और देशी भाषाएँ भी हाशिए पर चली गईं। लेकिन इन भाषाओं को भारत के भाषाई जगत से आसानी से नहीं हटाया जा सका।

अंग्रेजी और मंदारिन के बाद हिंदी अब दुनिया में तीसरी सबसे ज्यादा बोली जाने वाली भाषा है। प्रसिद्ध ऑक्सफोर्ड डिक्शनरी भी हर साल नए भारतीय शब्दों को जगह दे रही है। भारत के अलावा, यह फिजी, मॉरीशस, फिलीपींस, न्यूजीलैंड, युगांडा, सिंगापुर, नेपाल, गुयाना, सूरीनाम, त्रिनिदाद, दक्षिण अफ्रीका, सूरीनाम, कनाडा और पाकिस्तान में भी कुछ परिवर्तनों के साथ ही सही लेकिन हिंदी बोली और समझी जाती है।

मुझे खुशी है कि हाल के वर्षों में हिंदी का उपयोग विशेषकर सोशल मीडिया में तेजी से बढ़ा है। किंतु जिस प्रकार आज के युवाओं में मिश्रित हिन्दी का प्रयोग बढ़ा है, वह शुद्ध हिन्दी के पोषकों के लिए करारा तमाचा है, जिनकी हठधर्मिता के कारण हिन्दी अपने ही देश मेें पनप नहीं पा रही थी।

सोशल मीडिया की पहुंच में वृद्धि के साथ, हिंदी की लोकप्रियता भी बढ़ी है। यूट्यूब व्लॉग्स, स्टैंड-अप कॉमेडी या ट्विटर ट्रेंड्स और मीम्स के रूप में हिंदी में सामग्री तेजी से विभिन्न समूहों के बीच लोकप्रिय होती जा रही है। यद्यपि अक्सर रोमन हिंदी (अंग्रेजी लिपि में लिखित) का उपयोग करके व्याकरण और वर्तनी को नष्ट कर दिया जाता है।

आज जिस तरह मैथिली, भोजपुरी, पंजाबी, हरयाणवी, और बुंदेलखंडी लहज़े में हिंदी बोली जा रही है, वह हिन्दी की ग्राह्यता को हर वर्ग में दर्शाता है। अब तो डिजिटल और वर्चुअल दुनिया मेें भी यही प्रवृत्ति देखने को मिल रही है। यह लोकल से ग्लोबल की ओर जाने का संकेत है।

देश की प्रमुख भाषा होने के नाते हिंदी को उदारमना होना भी चाहिए, ताकि इसके विकास के साथ क्षेत्रीय भाषाएं भी फले फूलें। यह प्रसन्नता की बात है कि हिन्दी अपने ज्ञान कोष के साथ संस्कृति और विरासत की जड़ों को सशक्त करते हुए अपनी इस अपेक्षित भूमिका में स्वयमेव आ गई है, जो निश्चित ही एक शुभ संकेत है।

Self-love : Hindi Day

There is a famous poem in Hindi that says,
“It’s a stone, not a heart, if it doesn’t have the love for the own country.”

Self-acceptance is the beginning of self-love. But self-love is not selfish. You can’t truly love others until you know how to love yourself. You cannot glorify your mother by insulting others’ mothers. Someone had aptly said that loving yourself isn’t vanity, it’s sanity.

The same yardstick applies when it comes to languages. Remember, every language is someone’s mother tongue, mother’s language. It is the language in which a person learns to speak by faltering, for which we develop a natural affinity. This is the reason why we have original ideas in our mother tongue.

Each language is beautiful in its own way. Hence the insult of any language is an insult to a mother. We have to take all our mothers along, only then all-round inclusive development is possible.

Today is Hindi Day that is celebrated every year on the 14th September marking the declaration of Hindi as official language of India.

But only political patronage won’t do much, it needs genuine love and respect of the people, who unfortunately and invariably see English as a mark of social and hierarchical ascension. English medium convent schools are considered prestigious. Dog-owners always talk to their pets in English. Why?

I bet most of us had not read “Ret Samadhi” by “Geetanjali Shree”. But when U.S. translator, Daisy Rockwell translated this book originally written in Hindi in 2018 with title, “Tomb of Sand” and won the International Booker Prize this year, we came to know that such a gem is among us.

How many of us have read immortal works of Premchand like Gaban, Godan, Nirmala, Sevasadan, Karmabhoomi etc? How many of us have appreciated the soulful poems penned by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Jaishankar Prasad, Mahadevi Verma, Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala’, Ayodhya Singh Upadhyaya ‘Harioudh’?

Before British rule, Hindi had a considerable presence even in the writings of Muslim scholars like Rahim, Raskhan, Jayasi and Amir Khusro. But when a country is colonised, the first casually is the sense of national pride and language. With the arrival of Brits, not just Hindi, but other ancient and indigenous languages were also marginalised. But these languages couldn’t be simply deleted from India’s linguistic firmament.

Hindi is now the third most spoken language in the world after English and Mandarin. The famous Oxford Dictionary is also giving place to new Indian words every year. In addition to India, it’s also spoken and understood in Fiji, Mauritius, Philippines, New Zealand, Uganda, Singapore, Nepal, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad, South Africa, Suriname, Canada and Pakistan, though with some changes.

I’m happy that usage of Hindi has increased in leaps and bounds in the recent years. With the rise in social media exposure, popularity of Hindi has risen as well. The way the use of mixed Hindi has increased among the youth now, it is a befitting answer to the propagators of pure Hindi, whose dogmatic approach was an impediment for Hindi to flourish in its own country.

The contents in Hindi are increasingly becoming omnipresent among different groups in the form of YouTube vlogs, stand-up comedies or twitter trends and memes, though often grammar and spelling are destroyed using Roman Hindi (written in English script).

The way Hindi is being spoken with Maithili, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Haryanvi, and Bundelkhandi accents and tinges, it signifies the greater acceptance of Hindi by both the classes and masses.  Now the same trend is being seen in the digital and virtual world, moving from local to global.

Being the main language of the country, Hindi has to be liberal and inclusive, so that regional languages also flourish with its development.  It is a matter of joy and satisfaction that Hindi with its treasure trove of knowledge ensconced in our cultural and heritage roots, has come on its own, to play the role expected of it, which is certainly an auspicious sign.
