Life of the Soil

When the wind kisses her
she starts blowing hot and cold
like a young maiden,
in company with wind and sun
when she feels dry and thirsty,
she waits avidly for the moistness
to fill the cracks on her dryness,
and when rain comes
she gets drenched with joy
to prepare herself
for her green youth and fertility
changing colours and shapes
from time to time
and from place to place
just to serve humanity…

She gets molded
into any shape we need
by laying as a clay
on the potter’s wheel,
she purifies whatever she receives
so pious that a home gets purified
when coated with her,
she keeps open her chest to share
her bounty of crops, ores and minerals…

We err when we take
her fragility, humility and diversity
to shower her love and blessings
as her meek surrender
to the might of human rights,
but we forget
that not tending the soil
is to forget ourselves,
as she is the live example of
“as you sow, so shall you reap…”

  1. Thank you, Kaushal, for this poignant and beautiful poem as without soil humanity would not exist.
As our very existence depends on the soil, I not only cherish it but feed it too. Apart from usual organic additions, guided by Darwin, I cultivate the genius little creatures, the worms. If one sprinkles a good few handfuls of organic uncooked oats over the bed of soil, covers it lightly with compost, and then waters it, the warms will grow in numbers and the soil will not only be happy but sing ” as you sow, so shall you reap..”
As a vegetarian, I reap well!

    1. Thank you, Joanna, for such a wonderful response that I was expecting from you, being the very nature. The way you cultivate nature and its creatures is laudable. In fact, all complement and supplement one another, as you have rightly mentioned. That’s why you are reaping the benefits of this lovely relationship. Thanks again!

  2. KK, many people have lost their natural connection to the soil and to Mother Nature in general. This is sad. We all would benefit from heightened awareness as we try to overcome environmental challenges.

I found your poem very inspiring and loved the photo of a person planting potatoes. 🙂

    1. You’re right, Cheryl, we are losing touch. Even in my childhood days, we were much closer to nature, but due to advanced technology and mechanical lifestyle, we are not that much concerned. Thank you for sharing your realistic assessment ☺️

  3. A beautiful attempt, and a successful one, at connecting with the earthiness everybody carries in their core but often forget. Staying grounded takes so much more effort than one would want to admit. Lovely composition! 🌸

    1. Very well said! I agree what you say and believe. We tend to forget the nature and our own nature. Thank you for your kind visit and beautiful reflections 🌻
