Existence of Sand

Whenever I go to a beach
I see ocean water and waves
both transverse and longitudinal
coming and going
swaggering up and down,
but not the sand
on which I stand or walk leisurely…

Waves never stop
teasing and kissing sand
that in turn hugs my toes
but I quickly brush it off and
it embraces corals to its chest…

Sand remains there
and keeps moving slowly
in rhythm with frantic waves
winds play with it to form dunes
as if it has no existence for itself…

But it sacrifices its own existence
for the existence of
humanity, history and heritage
by getting subsumed
in the magnificent buildings,
temples, mosques and churches
to find a place of importance
from Sahara to Arabia
despite being neglected,
for telling stories selflessly…

When I hold it in my palm,
it slips through like time
whispering something very important
that we all tend to ignore
and keep challenging its existence
building castles of the same sand…

  2. Thank you, Kaushal, for your interesting thoughts on the greatness of sand.
You won’t be surprised that recently scientists found a new use for the method called
“age distribution fingerprint” to look at a mineral ZIRCON contained in every grain of sand as it may carry a significant trace of Earth’s history. The uniqueness of this mineral lies in not being contaminated or changed in any way over time by the seawater.

William Blake had a visionary view of sand:

“To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wildflower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
    And eternity in an hour.”

    1. I had read about zircon, but not the methodology you have talked about. That’s why, Joanna, I treat your comments as value addition, as I learn something new. William Blake’s quote is so apt in this context. Thank you so much, Joanna!

What a lovely phrase, highly evocative and descriptive. I am a Pisces, a true water person. I am drawn to the ocean almost as though the waves were calling my name. This is a wondrous piece which resonates strongly with me. Thank you for your beautiful words and images, KK. 🌊

  4. I enjoyed your philosophical take on the existance of sand. It interesting that though it seems to stay on the shore, events can shift it around just like our lives get shifted!
    Well done.
