The Reason for Being

Power, pelf and praise
increase the obesity of my ego
that pull me down to gravity
these weights keep me
encaged in myself,
I look up to the splendour of sky
but can’t fly
the heightened heights
of wills and desires
continue to beckon me
to fly above my soul…

These are the moments
that make me think in unison
that always brings the opposite
into the fray
so I keep it in abeyance
and continue to move across
courtyards of storms and floods
that shatter at times
the fragile bricks
of my dreamy fort of virtue
amidst the burden of animality,
the victory becomes a defeat
plus and minus make a minus
the mathematics of life is strange,
and so are its physics and physiology…

The wind ruthlessly tramples
the flowers that make it
fragrant and pleasant
without any rhyme or reason,
reasoning yields no reason
so I remain afloat in between
levitate at times
with ideas and actions
but within the reach
of air of reality and gravity
that may ultimately trace
a midway for me
to fulfil the reason for my being…

  2. The reason for your being, Kaushal, is to write your philosophical, thought-provoking, and complex poetry! I love the presentation too, as it adds so well to the meaning of the poem…
    Thank you!
